Life Can Be So Car-Free

by Andrea Manitsas

As if car-light living wasn’t already somewhat of an anomaly in Southern California, imagine the life of a freelance photographer sans the four-wheeling gas-guzzler he traded in for a muscle-powered two-wheeler. Long Beach-based photog Russ Roca has decided this logistically-challenging lifestyle is one worth living: “I bike because it’s healthy and environmentally sustainable,” says Roca. “I have a brother in Iraq and I feel guilty about using too much oil.” Roca, who bills himself as “The Eco-Friendly Bicycling Photographer,” outfits his bike with an Xtracycle frame to lug up to 200 pounds of heavy-duty camera equipment to jobs as far as 35 miles from home.
