Burzynski: Cancer Is Serious Business

Directed by Eric Merola
Review by Jacquelin Sonderling

Burzynski_Poster_GenCancer is big business. From fundraising walks and wristbands to the drugs and specialized medical training, it’s a multibillion dollar industry. But is all this revenue incentive for keeping a real cure hidden?

Deep in the heart of Texas lives Polish-born Stanislaw Burzynski, a medical doctor and biochemist. More than four decades ago Dr. Burzynski discovered a string of previously unknown naturally-occurring peptides. Healthy people seemed to have plenty of these peptides, but those with cancer had few or none. Based on his research, Burzynski developed a nontoxic, noninvasive treatment for many types of cancers using a compound he calls “antineoplastons.” These treatments have had very high success rates, especially with inoperable, highly aggressive cancers in children.

So what’s the problem? In spite of confirmations of the results of his treatments by many well-respected hospitals and agencies, the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners and the FDA have waged a 15-year battle to shut him down and shut him up. Why? Because approving his discovery would mean an end to the billion-dollar deals between pharmaceutical companies and the FDA, not to mention the entire cancer industry.

This film documents what appears to be the FDA’s legal vendetta against Dr. Burzynski—endless court battles, grand jury investigations, congressional hearings and so on. At the same time, Burzynski has been fighting to get the FDA to sanction his clinical trials and protocols.

This is not a slick, glossy film. It’s a little rough, with the news sequences running too long, and the edits and camera work during interview bytes often distracting. And although it has great stories from survivors, it could spend more time on the treatment. But in the end, the content overrides these problems. Anyone who has a vested interest in health—and that’s pretty much everyone—needs to stand up and demand that Dr. Burzynski be allowed and, in fact, encouraged to complete his clinical trials. For the FDA and National Cancer Institute to try to suppress this option to the de rigueur slash and burn cancer treatments is a crime against humanity.
